Qatar Sprint Race and Grand Prix Qualifying: Live Updates

Opening Notes

Our correspondent is about to begin to take you through today's sprint race (2pm GMT) and qualifying (6pm).

Current Events

Formation Lap Time

The warm-up lap has begun.

Circuit Details

There are 19 laps of the longest circuit in F1, David Croft points out.

Final Moments

The last moments is underway.

Driver Situation

An advantage in Verstappen's advantage: his fellow driver Yuki Tsunoda is in front of him by a single position. He is unlikely to interfere with Red Bull's lead driver.

Media Conversations

Sky's internal discussion currently: the analyst is with Mercedes.

The analyst is jumping ahead to the 2026 season, interviewing the engineer about his stepping up to Aston Martin team principal.

Starting Positions

Just sixteen vehicles on the grid. It was another bad qualifying for the driver: following his result of twentieth and final in the previous race, resulting in an eighth position in the grand prix, he did not manage to advance of Q1 again on Friday. Ferrari have as a result made changes to his car configuration and so he begins from the pit lane.

The team's Lance Stroll and the Alpine pair of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto are all starting from the same position.

Driver Comments

"We'll use the experience for the next day," states Isack Hadjar, 11th on the grid. Expect a lot of that.

Constructors' Championship

It's not all about the individual championship: The team have dominated the constructors' gong but the team, with a forty-point advantage over their rivals, are aiming to seal second place during this event. Russell can help them achieve that from second place, and Kimi Antonelli will start just behind the leader.

Past Performance

Piastri was victorious then – as he did last year, as well. McLaren's Australian is going for a hat-trick.

Short Race Importance

Alright, approximately twenty minutes remaining till the short race gets under way. Barring disaster, its main importance is as an indication of what is to come, rather than significant in its itself, with only eight points available to the victor. However, the runner-up spot in this race was sufficient for Verstappen to become champion in a prior season.

Max Verstappen claimed the championship following Pérez crashes out of Qatar GP sprint race.
